Stardust by Neil Gaiman (Goodreads Author)

4 out of 5 stars ****

Neil Gaiman writes a wonderful English fantasy that includes an English town and a fantasy world filled with magical beings. The two environments are separated by an old English rock wall that has a breach guarded by an elderly man preventing any passage from one world into the other. When the guardian is tricked and a young man from the mundane world manages to gain access to the magical realm, an enchanting tale begins.

The hero's father and mother play such a significant role in the beginning and end of this sweet romance. The middle of the tale is the story of young love, with all its awkwardness, provoking chivalrous action that leads to real, new found love. A young man finds his true love while on a mission to win the hand of a shallow, selfish girl with whom he is enamored. That mission has the hero crossing realms, following a shooting star, and growing up to be a confident, mature man who reunites with his past to bring his present to a state that ensures his future is happy ever after.

This reader is charmed by the romantic plot that intrigues with its complexities. The characters are so imaginative with their capabilities. The quest to find an object so valuable that it can provide eternal life and/or true love is the compelling motivation that consistently drives this story.

This adventure, full of magical twists and turns, allows for a pleasant read and an escape from this mundane world.
