Sue Grafton develops her protagonist, Kinsey Millhone, in this, the first of several novels about a female private investigator. The character development is done well in making Kinsey an intelligent, dedicated career investigator who must be brutally honest with herself to maintain the proper perspective while on a case. The reader is engaged with the story line and the character as human emotions cope with professional discernment leading to an interesting and thrilling climax.
