In Touch Daily Readings for Devoted Living December 2020 by Dr. Charles Stanley

5 out of 5 stars  *****

2020 ends with positive encouragement from scripture in Dr. Charles Stanley's In Touch devotional series. I never loose sight of the whole scheme of matters when reminded that God is always in control and never does anything that is not for our good and His praise.

Be Confident (Hebrews): Live by Faith, Not by Sight by Warren W. Wiersbe

5 out of 5 stars  *****

The author writes Be Confident: Live by Faith, Not by Sight utilizing the Book of Hebrews, chiefly, and various other biblical scriptures throughout the text. Hebrews is written by Christians for Christians as the New Testament struggles to retain believers who are prone to slip back into Judaism.

Moses compares to Christ in a few significant ways. Wiersbe elaborates that this teaching needs to convince followers that the the New Covenant brought by Jesus is a truer path to perfection because of Christ's divinity whereby the Old Covenant requires repeated sacrifices that do not save anyone once and for all.

The wise words of Hebrews and the excellent prose of Wiersbe succeed in relating the power of faith in Jesus Christ that leads to a more confident life with an intimate relationship with God.

In Touch: Daily Readings for Devoted Living November 2020 by Dr. Charles Stanley

These daily devotionals are a rock upon which to stand. Dr. Stanley presents scripture in such a compelling and applicable manner that his In Touch series becomes a calming routine in one's awakening hours. November, 2020, issue is the prescription the pastor ordered for the month fraught with elections, disagreements, claims of fraud, litigation, and a general sense of despair from the ongoing pandemic in the world. This last day of November, the last paragraph sums up the value of this inspired work, "You and I do not live by chance. As children of a sovereign God, we live secure and under His control. Trust Him to carry you through whatever trial stands in your way." - Dr. Charles Stanley

In Touch: Readings for Devoted Living: October 2020 by Dr. Charles Stanley

5 out of 5 stars  *****

October's 2020 devotional reading from Dr. Charles Stanley's In Touch: Readings for Devoted Living touches my soul every morning. The pages inform my intellect, awaken my sense of morality, and stir my passions. Deep introspection and calm guidance from scripture settles my heart and mind during these poignant times.

Explore the Bible: Personal Study Guide: Fall 2020: Isaiah by Mike Livingstone (Editor), Terry J. Betts

5 out of 5 stars  *****

There isn't a single day that goes by without my communion with God. Studying His word keeps me in tune with His plan, His will, and His love. I can never take anything for granted. Life is a blessed gift and it is easy to love the gift and forget the Giver.

Bible study reveals how God communicates with mankind across time through His prophets in the Old Testament. Isaiah is one of the most prolific of these chosen men. This study shows Isaiah to be a man who feels deeply for his people. He suffers as God passes judgment on them for their worship of false gods, their disrespect for the temple, and their falling further away from the Law of Moses. Isaiah prays for their redemption. He also sees that God must rebuke sin but not without mercy. Hope is given through a promise that a remnant of his people will remain, course corrected by a penance of captivity for their sins, and a humbling before the One and only God.

Be Mature (James): Growing Up in Christ (The "Be" Commentary) by Warren W. Wiersbe

5 out of 5 stars  *****

Wiersbe explains scripture so well. He refers to several scriptures when making a point that the Book of James teaches. Being a mature Christian requires more than time in church or attending a bible study. A personal relationship with God, Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit is necessary for one to grow in Christ. Be Mature: Growing Up in Christ directs the reader to passages that guide them closer to God which humbles while freeing the individual of fear, angst, and worry.

Dante's Divine Comedy by William R. Cook, Ronald B. Herzman

5 out of 5 stars  *****

A great lecture on Dante's Divine Comedy. Ronald B. Herzman and William R. Cook discuss this classic work in context as well as art in poetry. Dante's guided trek through Purgatory and Hell provides ample opportunity to describe the people who are too attached to the world and the flesh to enjoy an eternity of bliss in Heaven when mortality summons.

The professors give this lecture to several groups who identify with the protagonist but when he is in different realms. Prisoners see themselves in Purgatory atoning for their sins and students see themselves in Hell coping with the everyday stress of life. It is suggested by the author to reread this poem in order to grasp its full meaning and appreciate Dante's genius.

No Excuses: Existentialism and the Meaning of Life by Robert C. Solomon (The Great Courses)

4 out of 5 stars  ****

Thought-provoking and informative are two adjectives suitable for this Great Courses lecture series. The great philosophical thinkers share their thoughts and beliefs through the narration of Robert Solomon who also adds context to content by giving his audience a little background of each philosopher. These widely known, deep abstract thinkers include Albert Camus, Soren Kierkegaard and his worldview of Christianity; Friedrich Nietzsche on Nihilism and the death of God, among other topics, such as, morality; Husserl, Heidegger on Phenomenology, consciousness and one's interaction with their environment; and Jean-Paul Sartre on emotions and responsibility.

No study of Philosophy is complete without the inclusion of religion. Science takes man to understanding and possible belief. Kierkegaard postulates that since God is spiritual and separate from creation, being the Creator, belief requires a qualitative leap of faith. Solomon's closing lecture covers Existentialism, a philosophy about the control over one's life, to Postmodernism and its general distrust of any ideologies or worldviews.

5 out of 5 stars  *****

Many a day this devotional expresses exactly what I need to nourish my soul. Dr. Charles Stanley writes his explanation of Scripture citing book, chapter, verse from the Bible. His knowledge and open Christian heart apply the principles of each devotional to daily life. My desire to do God's will rather than my own makes such a work of communication, the devotional, necessary to mature as a Christian.

Funny Amazon Reviews by Jane Lynch

4 out of 5 stars  ****

This concept is interesting, an audio production of Amazon Reviews; so I listen. My preconceived misconceptions prove bias an unjust filter to reality. I laugh aloud as professional actors and comedians dramatize the script that writes itself.

Online shopping creates a new genre of literature, The Review. Reviews can be amusing and informative. A collection of reviews draws from an endless source of worldwide authors. I wonder if any of them receive royalties from this endeavor.

Be Right: An Expository Study of Romans (The "Be" Commentary) by Warren W. Wiersbe

 5 out of 5 stars  *****

The Book of Romans is text worth studying often. This study by Warren W. Wiersbe discusses the context in which the words are transcribed, words ascribed to the Apostle, Paul, and counted as the sacred word of God.

Paul starts many Christian churches throughout vast regions. They require tending as others try to falsely preach the gospel, one that benefits themselves and does not serve others. Paul sends letters with disciples to guide those straying from God's word. These instructions are tenets for Christians to live a life according to the Will of God and not a life of self pleasure and pride.

Wiersbe's study on Romans explores the fundamentals of Christianity with thought-provoking questions at the back of each chapter. Study groups discuss this biblical masterpiece for its many lessons that apply today.

Atomic Habits: An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones by James Clear (Goodreads Author)

5 out of 5 stars  *****

Ever start reading or listening to a book and find yourself grabbing pen and paper to jot down meaningful insights. Well, Atomic Habits is one. The thoughtful attention James Clear, author and narrator, brings to his proven process for improvement of an individual, team, or business demonstrates that he lives what he teaches. In his wisdom he applies logical analysis to his identification of components that lead to successful habits responsible for improvement in any aspect of life.

An important ingredient in success is setting goals, one's aim and direction toward a specific target or level of excellence. Clear points out that there are so many who do not set goals after reaching an acceptable comfort level of existence. Greatness comes when realistic goals from a system of small routines are enhanced and maintained by positive habits.

The outcome relies on the soundness of the system, not the goal. Honest introspection identifies habits as procrastinating, obstructive, or beneficial.  Examples of improved personality habits are: supplant smoking with practice on a musical instrument, overeating with exercise and meditation, watching TV with reading or journal writing. Identity-based habits should improve confidence and self-esteem. They develop qualities of a desirable person in reaching that goal. To achieve a goal that advances good to great, a system of outcome-based habits must also apply.

Change is not always easy and James Clear addresses that pitfall in the system. Once a goal is set, specific changes may pose difficulty. The author notes that changing "want" into "is" requires four factors to make the changed behavior habit: 1) Make it obvious 2) Make it attractive 3) Make it easy 4) Make it satisfying. The elaboration of each of these four steps is very useful in creating the environment necessary for goal attainment, success. Improved life has a set of small habits, a system that affects the entire person, to unclutter visual cues in an environment that maintains and promotes clarity.

An excellent story with superb writing and narration. Alexander X, book 1 of heroic struggles between genetically rare people who live for centuries and those who have a normal life expectancy. The protagonist is a teenager who blends in American society as a High School student. His recall of history is slightly different than taught but he cannot let on about how he knows the truth. Anticipation of Alexander X's sequel is how this book closes having no closure.

Cold Turkey: How to Quit Drinking by Not Drinking by Mishka Shubaly (Goodreads Author)

5 out of 5 stars  *****

This is a first-hand account about alcoholism and recovery. The author is brutally honest and genuine about his own introspection and various treatments out there, like, Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). The first half of the book is graphic in describing the tragedy of alcoholism and substance abuse.

Mishka Shubaly, an intelligent writer and musician, narrates his own story of dependence to freedom. His no-excuse attitude serves him well to escape depressing victimization. He perseveres, "Cold Turkey." Cold Turkey: How to Quit Drinking by Not Drinking is a compelling lesson about human frailty giving in to desires of the world and flesh (sin). The author pays dearly in every aspect of his life: physical, emotional, social, and economic. His turn-around comes with repentance, longsuffering, and recovery that gives life purpose and meaning. Mishka comes face-to-face with fear, the underlying issue of the book, and overcomes it.

4 out of 5 stars  ****

Three entertaining short stories well written and narrated by professionals in their industry. The interesting angle that all three stories share is the sudden shock of a Quarantine that causes them to stay at home and carry out their best laid plans from there. This angle is enough to tease today's listeners into investing a few hours of their quarantined day to escape and enjoy the fictional issues of what is called, "Inside Jobs."

Trickery (Curse of the Gods, #1) by Jaymin Eve (Goodreads Author)

4 out of 5 stars  ****

This Young Adult, Fiction/Fantasy has the right pace, plot, and character build to pique my attention as I enjoy the brash and sassy protagonist's adventure in Jaymin Eve's first book in her Curse of the Gods series, Trickery. Humor ameliorates any sense of horror or shock in this young female's self discovery.  She forms a working, sometimes amorous, relationship with her dominant, protective companions. This formula for interesting interaction unfolds in the writing skill of the author.

Magical powers define the tiers of social significance in this world. The heroine offers experiences from the bottom wrung to the top surviving much of what should kill her along the way. The conclusion of book #1 implies much leaving opportunities for book #2 to elaborate.

How to Defeat a Demon King in Ten Easy Steps by Andrew Rowe (Goodreads Author), Suzy Jackson (Narrator), Steve West (Narrator)

3 out of 5 stars  ***

First chapter reveals the protagonist as a young girl who finds herself in a Sword-in-the-Stone scenario. The antagonist is identified as the Demon King. The plot is to kill or dethrone the Demon King using a hero. Follow the young girl as she develops skills and confidence along a path of many challenges she must overcome on her quest. She discovers her own magic maturing as she befriends other magical beings to assist her.

This Young Adult fantasy fiction moves at a quick pace. Some of the adventures are generalized; like, killing monsters along the way as they approach the Demon King's castle. A greater description details the surprise meeting of protagonist with the antagonist. The climax exposes the remaining characters' magic as they fulfill their duties heading into the story's conclusion, one with an open end.

An Audible Bedtime Story, A Short Account of the History of Mathematics is an interesting account about Mathematics' origins and its significant contributors. Despite all the accomplishments of the Egyptians and Chinese, it is the Ionian Greeks who seem to apply Deductive Science to Mathematics. Tony Shalhoub explains this in his laid-back fashion with a pace and clarity that commands attention. The short time it takes to enjoy this Audible Original is well worth one's time.

In Touch Daily Readings for devoted Living July 2020 by Dr. Charles Stanley

5 out of 5 stars  *****

Many a day starts peacefully as I read July's In Touch devotionals. A good start does not mean a consistency of peace throughout the day but, at least, I have a reference to visit and a goal for which to strive. This daily wisdom sets my frame of mind right. Dr. Charles Stanley grasps God's word, which speaks to all of us. His inspired eloquence plainly explains biblical meaning. His ministry is to spread the Good Word, the Gospel. In Touch devotionals do exactly this with practical application for daily living regardless of circumstances.

The Getaway by Greer Hendricks (Goodreads Author), Sarah Pekkanen (Goodreads Author), Emily Bauer (Narrator)

4 out of 5 stars  ****

The story of a single, politically involved woman who blames herself for her father's heart attack he suffers on the way to her swim meet. That guilt and the recent stress of a failed political campaign causes Chloe, the protagonist, to look for a retreat for rest and relaxation. She finds The Getaway, a seemingly perfect place. Mystery develops into a thriller as soon as she becomes aware that she offers entirely too much information, willingly, during her sign-in.

This short story is fast-paced and interesting. The narration keeps the tale fresh while keeping the characters unique. This fiction fulfills the hunger for Mystery/Thriller genre.

The Naturalist (The Naturalist #1) by Andrew Mayne (Goodreads Author)

4 out of 5 stars  ****

A death in the woods by a bear turns into a thrilling mystery. The protagonist, a man of medical science, knows from his investigative findings that people are being horribly slaughtered by someone, or something, still on the loose. A cover-up or a desire that such a gruesome case would be closed seems to be in play.

Listened to first 10 chapters... interesting. Deeper into the book, I enjoy Andrew Mayne's style of storytelling. The narration keeps suspense and thrills alive with voice inflections at appropriate moments.

The Naturalist fulfills this listener's expectations with a well-written, professionally performed reading of Andrew Mayne's wilderness story. Future books by this author warrant further attention on the To Be Read list.

In Touch Daily Readings for Devoted Living: June 2020 by Dr. Charles Stanley

5 out of 5 stars  *****

This devotional nourishes my soul every morning. Dr. Charles Stanley has a natural way with the Word as he refers to Bible scriptures appropriate for the daily lesson. I have, yet, to read a Stanley sentence that is not applicable to the teachings of Jesus Christ. The life lessons have nothing to do with political correctness but everything to do with me in the midst of all events secular and spiritual.

Outwitting the Devil: The Secret to Freedom and Success by Napoleon Hill (Prólogo), Michael Bernard Beckwith, Sharon L. Lechter (Goodreads Author) (Editor), Mark Victor Hansen (Foreword)

5 out of 5 stars  *****

What a timely read/listen. Napoleon Hill writes this book during the rise of Hitler and it publishes in 2011. The subject matter is as controversial then as it is now. This book displays the author's worldview without any reference to any established religions. The interview style is an excellent format that allows both protagonist and antagonist to elaborate on deep psychological issues.

Mankind's struggle with temptation causes a drifting away from a moral path and eventually into a natural hypnotic rhythm of permanent negative thoughts, e. g., failure. Napoleon Hill asserts that the moral compass exists in men who are successful giants in their industry. Disciplined learning, even from failure, is essential for success, along with perseverance. Self-control maintains emotional balance to prevent distortion of will and reason. Once one betrays the moral code, that individual starts to drift. Staying focused requires Definiteness of Purpose or Intentional Purpose. Hill claims that success is almost guaranteed if one has Definiteness of Purpose with Definiteness of Plan.

So why adopt Definiteness of Purpose as a daily practice? Hill states that it is a fundamental step toward a spiritual, meaningful life. He suggests one follow seven principles: 1) Definiteness of Purpose  2) Mastery of Self  3) Learning from Adversity  4) Controlling Environmental Influence  5) Time; giving permanency to positive rather than negative thought habits and developing wisdom  6) Harmony  7) Caution: Thinking through plans before acting.

Explore the Bible: Proverbs; Song of Songs: Summer 2020 by Mike Livingstone (Editor), Kevin Shrum, Argile Smith

5 out of 5 stars  *****

This is a wonderful study about sound advice given by Solomon, the sage of his day and probably all time. His best advice is for his sons who are heirs to his throne. Wisdom is the theme throughout so Proverbs begins with God's wisdom which is graciously given when God sees fit.

Success depends on one's relationship with the Creator. Solomon stresses that if one follows God's laws then a life without fear is possible. Such obedience and trust praises and glorifies Him.

This Bible study also covers Solomon's Song or the Song of Songs. This is a beautiful explanation of a perfect marriage that is revered by both husband and wife. Their love is mature; not simply physical but emotional, and psychological as well. Solomon's wisdom also refers to the time when friendship between two lovers becomes more significant than physical attraction.

Proverbs and Song of Songs warrant revisiting time and again. Mankind's fallen nature causes straying from divine providence which can obstruct God's gentle lovingkindness. Foolish pride and arrogance is enough to ruin what could be a most successful and enjoyable life. King Solomon does his best to teach his children the grave responsibilities that come with leadership. Proverbs
contribu
tes to the moral compass necessary to steer a nation by solid, foundational principles.

The Vine Witch (Vine Witch, #1) by Luanne G. Smith (Goodreads Author), Susannah Jones (Narrator)

4 out of 5 stars  ****

First chapter intrigues as it begins inside a toad's head. Metamorphosis later, the protagonist emerges out of a seven year marshland curse. This beginning is actually the middle story of a young, talented Vine Witch, one who sees beyond the normal scope of people to enhance nurturing vineyards. How this young girl proceeds from her predicament is the story that eventually reveals all.

Luanne G. Smith creates a wonderful story in writing The Vine Witch. Imagination and a different twist on the genre of witches, magic, and the supernatural allow readers to escape into this fictional realm. Audible affords this listener the opportunity to continue mundane tasks, while wearing headphones, and coexist in another world through different characters. The writing transports, the narration entertains while there.

The Secret Battle of Ideas about God Participant's Guide: Overcoming the Outbreak of Five Fatal Worldviews by Jeff Myers

5 out of 5 stars  *****

This is an excellent book, guide, program about the differences between five popular worldviews, what makes each different from the other, and, unlike many of the apologetic literature, intentionally directs the participant in this body of work toward Christianity. In fact, Jeff Myers calls all other worldviews toxic, as a virulent disease.

Christianity teaches that there is only one way to Heaven and that is through faith in Jesus Christ, who states, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." - John 14:6 (NIV) A Christlike walk in life is a righteous one, one that demands obedience to God's will. This worldview also teaches that God can be wrathful, when necessary, but wants to shower mankind with His benevolence, "That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Jesus Christ." - Ephesians 2:7 (KJV) All other worldviews either deny God's existence or deny His loving interventions with mankind.

The author describes misleading worldviews as an Idea Virus, each idea full of despair because they separate mankind from the One, true God, Creator of Heaven and Earth. Secularism teaches that there is only the material world and no life after death. Marxism (Atheists) believe that the wealthy need to be overthrown and their wealth redistributed. Post-Modernism thinks that humans are devoid of meaning and hope because only the material exists. New Spirituality believes that mankind's problems are all spiritual and all else is an illusion. Finally, Islam preaches submission to Allah with rebellion against those who are not Muslim. Islam is a Totalitarian worldview. Muslims must follow Muhammad, its prophet, and Allah as slaves. The history of Islam and Western Civilization is rich with jihad, blood, and atrocities of war.

As participants, the author wants Christians to have true hope. Their faith and trust in Jesus Christ blesses them with joy, a gracious gift from the Holy Spirit. Their hope is joyous, awaiting eternity with Jesus, one day, in Heaven. This lesson informs Christians not to hope in themselves but to involve themselves in God's work, spreading His Good News, the gospel, restoring hope in others. People become agents of life, that precious gift of God that other worldviews regard differently.

Myers knows that the way of the Christian is fraught with persecution and resistance. He brings out the resiliency of Christians because they are, once more, blessed by the Holy Spirit's fruit of longsuffering, restraint in the face of turmoil, also known as patience. Christians bring stability in volatility. Genuine faith saves Christians who receive the Holy Spirit as a great companion, counselor, and comforter.

Human beings are full of faults. Christians are, too, since they are not different from anyone else, in this regard. Other worldviews can lead followers to a life of fear and regret. These bind them to toxic ideas that enslave them. Christians must face their mistakes, overcome obstacles, and remain loyal to God, through it all, with fearlessness. They are confident in their hope and faith. If not, they are prey to counterfeit worldviews, no hope, and a contagion of despair, the Idea Virus.

The Club King: My Rise, Reign, and Fall in New York Nightlife by Peter Gatien

5 out of 5 stars  *****

The protagonist and author, Peter Gatien, starts buying old clubs and renovating them into successful, well-known establishments. He has a great work ethic, his finger on the pulse of nightlife clubbing, and a common sense that saves him from tragedy early on in his career. In the midst of his world collapsing around him, losing his first family, and doing a short prison stint, he learns from his mistakes and produces even greater success in the Nightclub scene around the world. The fall of this world-class celebrity comes at the persistence of a famous New York City prosecutor and eventual Mayor, Rudy Giuliani, who suspects Peter is involved in the drug world.

This story is a look at Gatien's humble beginnings and his catapulting fame and fortune due to his bold plunges into projects he extensively researches. He has connections with those who have connections; so, word of mouth is his main form of advertisement. The knowledge of what is cutting edge, successful, safe, and enduring make his clubs the place everybody wants to be. The big names in Hollywood, Washington D.C., London, and Paris frequent his clubs spending top dollar for top shelf bottles.

Many famous people owe much of their careers to Peter Gatien. Another impressive quality Peter shows throughout the book is his organizational skill. He is rarely caught off guard. Even at the end of his trial, he arranges a solution to live the best life possible between Canada and the USA with his present family.

I find this subject easy to relate to because it occurs during my younger days. I learn from this book background information about the music scene, the street scene, LGBTQ, and the introduction of sophisticated, potent cosmetic drugs. I do not identify with but understand the crazy characters that came out of blight and into fantasy that offers safe space for a night. Peter Gatien offers this account of his contribution to that therapeutic escape, all because he keeps his wits about him as those around him party.

Second Skin by Christian White, Ellen Archer (Narrator)

3 out of 5 stars  ***

Tragedy happens and a decade later a young woman says she is sent by that tragic figure, the woman who, in the past, jumps off the bridge known as, "The Easy Way." Investigation reveals that events are not as reported. The protagonist, the husband of that woman, hears about a nine-year-old who claims to be possessed by his wife. She claims she is pushed off the bridge that night, she did not jump. The plot opens wounds and new investigations to reveal the truth. In the end, main characters chat about their experience and reflect on its consequences. The writing is good and the story line interesting but this reviewer is not riveted by its telling. This is why Second Skin rates a three out of five stars.

The Messengers by Lindsay Joelle

4 out of 5 stars  ****

A dark comedy that is well-written and portrayed by the skilled women responsible for this short story play. The science fiction aspect is intriguing. The hidden message in this drama is the mind-expanding notion about our understanding of creation and utilizing it for our own desires. Sending messages through a person's DNA, to be retrieved at any generation as per coded.

The Messengers also touches upon the biases created by differences. The story questions species identification when DNA manipulation is involved. Is the subject who he/she was or do they identify with the new, physically changed being, sheep with wolf mentality. This unfolds in the story when apparent betrayal occurs. Thoughtful discussion on the science behind their mission occurs revealing possible concepts for future endeavors in genetics.

Performances were excellent. The total presentation flows scene from scene cohesively. The comedy evokes open laughter and the science in the fiction fascinates.

Explore the Bible: Romans (Spring 2020) Personal Study Guide by Bob Bunn

5 out of 5 stars  *****

Paul explains Christianity to Romans and what it means to be one. He gives all the praise to God as he humbly explains Jesus Christ and the Good News, the Gospel. In Romans, Paul points to Abram, Abraham, in Genesis and David in Psalms to demonstrate how salvation is through faith and not good works. Also, Paul teaches that man cannot win God's grace. God bestows His blessings upon man out of Love. Paul stresses how mankind needs Jesus Christ's sacrifice on the cross and resurrection from the grave to justify sins and defeat death. Eternal life with God is the reward. Paul knows that the Holy Spirit is with him as his influence establishes a consistent, holy ministry of Christian churches throughout much of the known world.

The Science of Sci-Fi: From Warp Speed to Interstellar Travel by Erin Macdonald (Narrator)

4 out of 5 stars  ****

The Great Courses provide a lecture about science in this Audible Book. Science Fiction compliments science with its pursuit of Time Travel, Multiverse, Artificial Gravity, Faster than the Speed of Light Theories. Erin Macdonald explains why some futuristic innovations in Science Fiction are feasible and why some are not. Macdonald admits she is a Star Trek fan. The writers go to great lengths to explain how its Transporter technology needs a new technology, that does not exist today, in order to adjust for a law of physics that would otherwise make Transporters impossible.

The expansive universe fascinates a curious mind who thirsts for knowledge, truth, and hopes that the future looks as bright and wondrous as stories depict. These stories from foundations of science entertain without insulting the very people responsible for finding solutions to future problems. The Science of Sci-Fi: From Warp Speed to Interstellar Travel sparks interest in the sciences because of the cheery attitude of Erin Macdonald as narrator. Her enthusiasm conveys that SciFi novels/movies are precursors for limitless adventure, gadgets, and services.

Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell, Simon Prebble (Narrator)

4 out of 5 stars  ****

Very good. The narration by Simon Prebble is excellent. The protagonist, Winston, is aware of the injustice that occurs every day but he cannot say anything about it or even look like he is thinking about it. There are "thought crimes" and "facial crimes" when one is guilty of looking guilty. Anything the government, "Big Brother," does cannot be wrong so when "Big Brother" is wrong, history is rewritten to favor the actions of the government. The goal of the government is world domination, prevention of independent thinking by the masses, and massive genocide without being caught, to cull the herd. The epilogue explains Newspeak, a carefully developed vocabulary that actually diminishes over time. Generalized terms replace undesirable words that promote independent thinking and daydreaming. All communication by the masses is to bolster the function of the collective or else it is a disease to the system.

Caffeine: How Caffeine Created the Modern World by Michael Pollan (Goodreads Author)

5 out of 5 stars  *****

A study on caffeine withdrawal quickly leads to the history of caffeine's existence and its interaction with nature, especially human beings. Michael Pollan writes and narrates a delightful book that informs and entertains his audience. The ancient use of coffee and tea differs today in Western Civilization but still has its spiritual bond and romance with Oriental cultures.

The obvious effect of coffee on stamina, memory, and enthusiasm makes the addictive drug in these products, caffeine, the worldwide leader in daily use and abuse. Leaders of industry give caffeine to their workers for better production and greater profits. Those who harvest the caffeine laden crops employ more slaves and traders to meet supply and demand. Sugar turns out to be a related crop in that its use in tea and coffee creates a greater demand for these products. It is fair to say that caffeine shapes our history in making giants of industry on the backs of slavery.

In the Civil War, the North make sure their soldiers drink caffeine issuing 30 pounds of coffee per month for each one. Some commanders make their men fill their canteens with coffee before battle. This is the opposite of the South who are denied coffee rations among other luxuries; like, shoes, ammunition, food. Historians say that Southerners tire more easily and harbor feelings of frustration and depression because of their circumstances. It is possible that caffeine helps the North win the war.

This reviewer enjoys the narration and the honesty of this story, itself. Caffeine positively affects so many in the world today. Its story is ongoing in societies, international relations, transportation, economies, and cultures. It is all so familiar in an individual's life that it is taken for granted, unless medical concerns raise one's attention to its effects. Having said this, it is time for this patron to pursue his third cup this morning.

Malcolm and Me by Ishmael Reed

3 out of 5 stars  ***

This recent Audible Audio narration is by Ishmael Reed, himself, who accounts his own path that brings him to meet the man who shares this biography's title. The author meets Malcolm X as a man before he becomes the dynamic speaker and charismatic figure in black culture. Reed's assessments are honest and fair when recalling his time with Malcolm X.

I find this story well written, well spoken, and interesting.

You Ought To Know Adam Wade by Adam Wade

3 out of 5 stars  ***

A personal memoir. Comedian, Adam Wade, reflects on his life. Adam describes awkwardness, low self-esteem, geekiness, humiliation, bullying, and shyness while demonstrating an ability to express himself cogently, laugh at himself, and accept himself for who he is. A natural story-teller, Adam Wade, recounts his life introspectively, highlighting pivotal moments. His story is mildly funny accented with inflections and mannerisms that easily relate to human frailty and inhibition. He is courageous enough to allow his real sensitive feelings emerge at the conclusion of certain episodes in his life exposing vulnerability, giving the rendition more character.

The Minuteman by Greg Donahue, Jonathan Davis (Goodreads Author) (Narrator)

3 out of 5 stars  ***

A quick peek into America's past concerning the Nazi party's rise in America; in particular, Newark, New Jersey. Hitler's surge in Germany affects Nazi American antisemitism to the point where a Jewish mafia takes measures to assure safety for Jewish communities. A particular group of tough guys form, The Minutemen, the Jewish mob's answer to Nazi recruitment and pro-fascist activities.

This story's protagonist is Sidney Abramowitz, an ex-boxer who changes his name to Nat Arno during his boxing days to hide his unsavory career choice from his parents. Nat goes on to become leader of The Minutemen in 1934 and passionately defends American Jews from fascism and the German-American Bund. His violent actions employ gangster techniques and demonstrate how fire fights fire during times of upheaval, revolution, and fascism's attempt to gain a foothold in America.

Captured By Grace Itp by David Jeremiah (Goodreads Author)

5 out of 5 stars  *****

John Newton's story encapsulates the gift of grace once he sees the world through the eyes of Jesus Christ. He writes the hymn, Amazing Grace. Then the author explains the depravity of mankind making everyone capable of, both, righteousness and evil. David Jeremiah refers to the Apostle Paul to cite that righteousness exists living in Jesus Christ. Paul also points out that man's works mean nothing without faith. Grace accepted by faith in Jesus justifies one for eternal life with God.

Analysis of the Prodigal Son and some personal experiences are the next platforms for Captured by Grace: No One Is Beyond the Reach of a Loving God. It is never too late to turn back to the One who loves us, regardless, and who promises to shed His grace on all; but He offers salvation to those who learn the lessons from His word and follow Jesus Christ.

Taking God for granted perpetuates the drift away from Him. Crisis is often the impetus that reorients lost souls to God's plan. Our faith is tested with temptation, evil's shrewd suggestion for us to disobey God. Grace saves us through our faith and actions demonstrate this by our obedience to God's will.

Grace enlightens the world. The ultimate gift from God is His grace allowing Christ's victory over death in his resurrection. We know there is life after death as Christ fulfills that prophecy. This makes forbearance, the longsuffering the bible mentions, tolerable with an ever present joy, regardless of circumstance. Thankfulness for everything God does is the mark of a Christian captured by grace.

Triggered: How the Left Thrives on Hate and Wants to Silence Us by Donald Trump Jr.

4 out 5 stars  ****

Donald Trump, Jr., remembers growing up in a divorced family that has him with his mother in Czechoslovakia and in the United States with his famous father. He learns from his father's construction sites and meets the people who operate machinery, build skylines and country clubs around the world. His father takes young Donald everywhere with him as his father did with him.

This book conveys respect for Conservative values with strong anti-Socialist views. The author introduces this fact before the narrator speaks about the barrage of attacks his father, Donald Trump, Sr., receives from Democrats and the mainstream media (MSM). Don, Jr., also refers to several public and shameful incidents he and his family experience since his father became President of the United States (POTUS).

The title, Triggered, explains the quick negative reactions so many Trump haters feel obliged to share. Any success for America is as if it did not happen, at all, because it does not feed the loathing spirit clinging to the lost. Don, Jr., writes this book because it is not in the nature of Trumps to flee when there is a fight. Triggered is a nice review of the political scene for the last three to four years. Donald Trump, Jr., relates these years from his unique perspective making his book worth the endeavor.

Unspeakable Things by Jess Lourey (Goodreads Author), Caitlin Kelly (Goodreads Author) (Narrator)

3 out of 5 stars  ***

Strange things taking place in Minneapolis, Minnesota, or thereabouts. A young girl hears rumors of young boys missing for a few days then returning a changed person. Her home life is strained by an alcoholic father who can go off at any moment causing her, her sister, and her mother to feel more uncomfortable than loved. Once, she feels protected by him when she meets the older boy known as "Goblin." This ex high school football jock gets this nickname after an automobile accident leaves him with severe head injuries that cause him to behave like some demon possessed creature who eats fingers and brutalizes animals. Her father warns her and her sister to never go over to this boys house. Strange, inappropriate sexual parties start up involving neighbors.  This depresses the children. The kids start to investigate the strange abductions of young boys on their own.

This book is told through the eyes of an adolescent girl, 12 going on 13. It has the feel of a Young Adult Horror story based on real occurrences. The character development is good and the story line suspenseful. This reader has a different ending in mind once it ends but that speaks to the author's ability to be mysterious with the obvious. This bleak tale does not have closure in its finale but the beginning of new stories to flesh out.

Pont Neuf by Max Byrd, Natasha Soudek (Narrator)

4 out of 5 stars  ****

Historical Fiction about WW II and a young female war correspondent, Annabella March, Annie, who studies the famous Martha Gelhorn while in France, 1944. Annie becomes a great photographer preferring pictures to words. She meets two Harvard bred officers, one, a truly courageous soldier and the other, an officer who does not see the front line action his Harvard buddy does. It is Gelhorn's influence and notoriety that permits Annie access to these officers and planners of war tactics. She discovers the politics and ego-driven decisions in wartime that unnecessarily result in the deaths of so many men. Her association with Martha also grants her an insult from Martha's estranged husband, Earnest Hemmingway. Annie desires to share herself with the courageous soldier but the timing is rotten. Germany is about to launch the Battle of the Bulge and all allied troops must direct their attention to this famous, historical event.

Pont Neuf , French for New Bridge, crosses the Seine River in Paris. This is the location of the last scene for this story. What precedes this scene is the heroic victory of the allies over their enemy and the terrible cost it exacts on Annie's soldier. A decision to follow orders or follow one's heart creates the suspenseful tension in the epilogue leaving listeners with a tearful reminder that war destroys the conquered and devastates victors. It affects all who participate.

Explore the Bible: Numbers; Deuteronomy by Mike Livingstone (Editor)

5 out of 5 stars  *****

The Israelites, led by Moses, head toward the Promised Land. Numbers tells of the great trials and tribulations of a saved and consecrated people, at Mt Sinai; who, two generations, wander in the desert for 40 years because the first rebelled against Moses and God so often. The second generation prepares for war having their faith in the One true God and the Ark of the Covenant to protect them. Moses passes away before the tribe enters the Promised Land but he makes Joshua Judge and leader.

Deuteronomy tells of the teachings by Moses to the second generation who must learn the Israelite history so that they know Abraham, whom God makes a Covenant, is their ancestral father and they are about to fulfill that covenant with their actions in the Holy Land. Moses stresses the need to follow the law of God, the Ten Commandments, and to obey God's will in their enormous endeavor or suffer being scattered throughout the world. The Israelites fail to obey and suffer the fate of this warning.

The stories and messages from these two books are sources from which Jesus refers approximately 1600 years later. In Deuteronomy Peter identifies Jesus as the one prophesied to rise up in the future and lead his people like Moses. When Satan tempts Jesus in the desert, where he fasts for 40 days, Jesus refers to Deuteronomy with His immediate responses telling Satan that man does not live by bread alone (Deuteronomy 8:3), not to test God but have faith in Him (Deuteronomy 6:16) and to worship no one but God, alone (Deuteronomy 6:13 and 10:20). When a scholar of the law asks Jesus what is the greatest commandment, Jesus responds with Deuteronomy 6:5 which states that obedience follows supreme love of God. Deuteronomy 6:4-9 is known as the "Shema" in Judaism, the most famous Old Testament passage.

Explore the Bible: Numbers; Deuteronomy is a study that confirms prophesy that Jesus Christ is essential as the one perfect, obedient son of man and God worthy of sacrifice for mankind's sins. He did not come to this world to teach obedience of God's law; rather, to sacrifice His life out of the great love of God, our Father, so that people may follow Him and receive salvation through Him who knew no sin.  Faith saves through the grace of God.  Good works are a result of great love but not sufficient, alone, for salvation.

Ruffian: Burning From the Start (Kindle Edition) by Jane Schwartz

4 out of 5 stars  ****

A mare who wins every race in which she participates and sets records at every track, Ruffian is far and away the best filly to grace the sport of horse racing. All ten of her races are against other mares; so the stage is set for her to prove to the "Sport of Kings" enthusiasts that she can beat the best male stud, Foolish Pleasure, winner of the Kentucky Derby. The match race is set and the sport reaps the rewards of a packed stadium to view the spectacle. What the fans witness is one of the most remarkable competitions that leaves a lasting, unexpected memory in the history of such a demanding sport.

This story is so much more than a sporting event. It is the human experience of love many have for excellence, grace, and beauty regardless of species. In this way, Jane Schwartz touches the soul that spiritually connects people. Readers are right there with the characters, who are unique in their own right. This true story evokes the sublime with sudden tragedy that transports human sympathies to depths no one thought capable of feeling. It is peculiar that people's desire to pit these two magnificent animals against each other in this contest is for their own foolish pleasure.
