This is an excellent biographical and tragic romance novel about the Boleyn sisters, Mary and Anne, who are both subject to their father's and uncle's decisions to make one of them King Henry VIII's surrogate mother to England's regal heir. The Queen, Catherine of Aragon, proves to be barren and she agrees that the arrangement is a socially acceptable solution. Lady Elizabeth Boleyn, the girls' mother, dislikes the proposition that the men think will improve their social status forever.
Lady Elizabeth teaches her daughters to be well educated, refined, and wise in the ways of a man's world. She wants them to marry into a royal, upper class family and not become the whores of the King. Her designs for her family fall on deaf ears and so the drama ensues, one in which all soap operas can only aspire.
